I got my record number and I have received access to Ancestry.com tonight. I spent a short time searching this evening and here is what I have discovered:

1. My Mom's Mom's Dad's Mom on a census from Germany in 1871. She was only a year old. Catherina Eggers - the youngest daughter. The one thing I was unable to translate on this document was the occupation of the father and eldest brother. If anyone can read and translate them then they would be super awesome to comment on this post. (You can zoom in your webpage to see it bigger)

2. My Dad's Dad's Dad. Clarence Milton Gowder Roe - this man is a mystery. There are all sorts of rumors and some interesting documents found about him. His life and circumstances before he married my great grandmother are still largely unknown with just clips here and there that don't have any connection. I did find earlier this year that he was married twice before my grandmother and had two boys with one - Lillie Mae Jones. Joe Gowder and James Gowder. Joe died at the age of 5 from burns - James at the age of 10, unknown. It is unclear whether Clarence left Georgia before or after their deaths.
Tonight, I found his WWI Draft Registration Cards which puts him working in Utah at the age of 21. I don't know when he went to Utah or for how long he was there but I know he went back to Georgia before September 14, 1919 - when he married Lillie. The registration cards do show that he had gray eyes - like my dad, like me (we usually associate them as blue, but they are blue-gray). They also state that he worked for a J. Leo Bown. After some further research I found that Joseph Leo Bown was a sheeprancher in southern Utah.
I have also found his obituary on Newspapers.com. Printed July 4, 1979.

Getting Serious About Family History

Because of the recent access that Ancestry.com has given members of the LDS church, I now have full access to my family's history! I have already found some things that I am excited about but I realized I am never going to be able to keep anything straight or remember what awesome things I've discovered if I don't keep some sort of record. So here I am. I am going to post about things I find whenever I work on my family history. This is mainly an account for myself and my family but feel free to read anyway if you are not related. ;)
